In 1542 Juan Rodriques Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay and claimed the land for Spain. In 1825 the Mexican Government took control of the territory. San Diego continued to change hands from Mexico to the US until 1846 when General Stephan Kearney reached San Diego and set up permanent headquarters. The city of San Diego was incorporated on March 27. 1850. Home of the US Navy on the Pacific Coast San Diego has a strong base in both agriculture and manufacturing. San Diego county ranks 20th in value of agriculture production. Among the 4,000 manufacturing companies are electronics, ship building, aerospace, industrial machinery, oceanics and biomedical. For the last two decades it has made a concerted effort to move from defense as a main stay of the local economy to tourism…and now high technology and telecommunications. |
