Las Vegas Metro Area

Las Vegas, seat of Clark County, is the largest city in Nevada and one of the fastest growing cities in the US. In the first half of the 90s Las Vegas Metro area increased 26% from 852,646 to 1,076,267.

Discovered by Spanish explorers in 1829, Las Vegas is the Meadows in Spanish referring to the watering place for travelers to Southern California. In 1855 it was first settled my Mormons attracted by the springs, but they abandoned it in 1857. The US Army established Fort Baker in 1864. The town was established in 1905 with the arrival of the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad.

Las Vegas growth began in earnest with the legalization of gambling by the Nevada legislature in 1931.

Tourism and the convention industry are Las Vegas major sources of income. Major high tech companies are located there. Three of the reasons it are proximity to sophisticated military technology centers like Nellis Air Force Base, the top-secret Nuclear Testing Grounds and the College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
